Our Samoyeds
The Dashing Sams: A Look Back in time
We acquired our first Samoyed, Moqui in the early 90's. We were looking for a pet that we could go hiking with, or as Bob will tell you, Jill was looking for a pet she could go hiking with! Through Moqui and a co-worker of Jill's, we were introduced to skijoring and bikejoring and the rest is history. Dashing Sams became our Kennel name in 1995, a name chosen to present two things we saw in the breed, their great beauty and their love of running.
After Moqui, Jill researched a number of Samoyed Kennels looking for a place to acquire our second puppy. She contacted Brenda Abbott of Kriskella Samoyeds, a kennel known for their dual purpose working and show Samoyeds. We feel very fortunate to have purchased our second puppy from Brenda and Geoff who we learned so much from over the years we were in the breed. Our next several Samoyeds, Finnegan, Mingus, Sparkle, and Kes all were descended from Kriskella dogs. Mingus and Kes came from other breeders but half the pedigree was from Kriskella. We will always be impressed by those first Samoyeds we had, their exceptionally strong working focus and drive.
Our next addition came from Janice McGlashon of Cold Smoke Samoyeds, Dasher. Her dogs were all from the Wolf River bloodline. I was excited to acquire Dasher as I had ready about Kay Hallberg's teams having competed in mid distance events in the 1980's. This was one of my goals and I hoped Dasher might help me with this one.
When Brenda and Geoff decided to retire from breeding we began to look around for other lines to add to our kennel and contacted Darlu Littledeer of Abakan Samoyeds. We had helped Darlu place a female during a move with a friend in Flagstaff and liked the dog very much, one reason we contacted her. Abakan Samoyeds are also a well known line of working Samoyeds. Cedar and Willow came to join us.
After this we added several other Samoyeds all from different lines that descended from Kay Hallberg's Wolf River Samoyeds, These included Nova from Beth Tallentire of Sizzlin Samoyeds and Donner and Blizzard from Candice Celestina Smith of Chelestina Samoyeds.
In fall 2006, a friend Barbara Campbell contacted me about breeding her fabulous sled bitch and Champion Am Can Int. Ch Casper's Hi Sierra Gem WSX to Cedar. Out of this litter we kept a male, Skye. I bred my first and only litter in 2007, Nova to a male owned by Don Duncan of Seaview Samoyeds. This male, Nordviken's Obraz Zima Krasiva, was one of his main leaders but also had a pedigree that I was very interested in as it included both scandinavian working dogs as well as two prominent American lines: Kriskella and Abakan. There were 5 pups, three of whom stayed with us and two which went to homes as pups. Rose, Saffron and Pepper stayed at Dashing.
Over the years I enjoyed a variety of activities with our Samoyeds including Obedience, Agility, Packing, Bikejoring, Scootering, Dog Sledding, and Conformation. Several of our Samoyeds acquired their Working Samoyed titles through the Samoyed Club of America. I finished one AKC Conformation Champion: Nova and major pointed some other dogs. Dog powered sports became my true passion. In time Jill transitioned her team over to Siberian Huskies.
All of our beloved Samoyeds have passed on now. May they run free and find and endless supply of cookies until we join them again!
